Our startup was stitched from two APWIN sessions

Session: 2026-09-27 06:32 → 07:59 and 2026-09-28 02:48 → 04:04 UTC (one conversation, two evenings) · Findings: finding 9 (T84) in docs/T88_arb_entry_context.md · Start of docs/WORKING_WITH_CLAUDE.md

Where we started

Multitone measured correctly from an external source. The AP's generator still could not play one, and the blocker was finding 8: EC writes to the generator module (0x40) did nothing for us, though APWIN's identical bytes worked.

Chris opened with: "A necessary step will be to get the 2522 to generate the multitone, now that we know the analyzer and FFT can handle multiple tones at once"

The working belief was: something in the byte stream we send differs from APWIN's, and a diff will find it.

The question

Why do EC writes reach the generator for APWIN and not for us?

What happened

A capture we already had. Claude checked the eight dualTone captures for a native two-tone shortcut and found no secondary-frequency writes in any of them. It then proposed a new capture. "isn't that what we did the full multitone run and pcap on APWIN for? I'm confused." It was. T84 had been read for its readback side only. Its generator side showed 490 download blocks: APWIN's multitone is a waveform played in arb mode, so there was no shortcut. Claude noted it was the third time that week the answer was already in a capture on disk.

A shorter sitting, and the EC→GEN diff. "i am actually back from the break, so i am good to work on this some. just not as late as last night's work" The diff found that APWIN reads GEN_A 2,866 times in T88 and Cascade read it zero times. Polling GEN_A was tested on hardware: still a sine. The run exposed a second amplitude write after the arb select, which Claude had left in when moving amplitude into the entry sequence. Removing it: still a sine.

A "zero" that was a parser bug. Checking whether the init blob ever touched the generator, Claude first reported zero generator packets, then found its blob parser had produced two packets instead of 40,065 and retracted it. The blob did touch the generator (2,655 GEN_A packets). It started at T89's OUT packet 13, so it was not truncated.

A June comment, tested. "EC writes to GEN are confirmed ineffective post-init" was a comment from June, written before the project learned that polling matters. Claude built an EC→GEN PROBE. Chris: "you said "Then run an FFT (WAVEFORM = Sine, GenMon or loopback, N = 2048)." - what frequency should it be set at" The question exposed a flaw: the FFT would rewrite the frequency on the 8A path and erase what the probe wrote. Claude added driveGenerator: false and a self-reported verdict. Result: inert, peak still 1024 Hz. Chris raised the validity of earlier runs: "interestinly, in previous EC-Gen runs i don't think you specified that I change any settings in the interface. this time i did as instructed, but it may mean that earlier runs were not as valid" Claude checked the logs; they had DUT input and a −20.03 dBV input check, so they stood. The vendor USB control requests were also identical to APWIN's.

What does that actually mean, tactically? Claude had written "we replay a recording, APWIN executes live." "that reads like you need APWIN to do something, which would be a PC thing." Claude agreed the phrasing was sloppy: the comparison is between our replay's responses and the responses already recorded in a capture. Step 0 checked the pipe after the blob replays (clean). Claude noted that _checkPipeEmpty had only been wired into the sequences it had just written, and never into the blob replays that carry far more traffic.

Step 1, and an early exit. The init replay had been discarding every response (_ = _read(64, timeoutMs: 40)). Keeping them took minutes. "oh interesting you said an hour of coding. that was more like a couple minutes" The diff script printed "NO DIVERGENCE" after breaking out of its loop. Only 2,512 responses had been compared. The blob and T89 shared a 13,008-packet prefix and then diverged, so T89 was the wrong reference. The usage line in extract_init.py named apwincap-a.pcapng, and the blob's first packet was not in it.

The story document. "I started this project partly to learn how to work better with claude code." Chris asked for a timeline built from the past and kept current. Claude wrote docs/WORKING_WITH_CLAUDE.md from the 33 feedback memories and offered a visual page as an alternative. "why not both?" The page "The Correction Log" was published as an artifact.

The next evening: provenance. "what exactly do we need to do to get that next step going?" A raw search found the blob tail in no capture. Claude ran a control before believing it: the search window of 600 bytes was too small for three packets in pcapng framing. Claude called it the second absence-of-evidence error in two days. Testing the obvious candidate gave coldstart.pcapng a 25,567-packet match, stopping exactly at the first FF DSP-image reference the reader didn't expand. With references expanded: all 40,065 packets, from bulk-OUT 12.

A compelling table, then a retraction. All 23,289 responses compared; 17,124 differed. Most sat in the EEPROM identify chain, and Claude deflated that lead itself. Then Chris asked for plain language and a check on risk: "I don't want regression on the current features to make the calibration work and other accomplishments invalid." Claude listed what had changed by risk: no calibration or decode function touched, one shared-path change (a post-reload DSP wait), and V11 passing after it. "go ahead with the response attribution fix" Doing that, Claude found the recording had zero 8A entries while the diff reported thousands of 8a 01 20 divergences. _replayPackets restarts its index for Phase 2, so Phase 2's responses had been compared against Phase 1's commands. A comment on the dump function said the phase was prefixed. The code did not do it. Four rounds of analysis were void. Claude saved feedback_comment_claimed_a_safeguard.md.

The finding that survived. "OK yeah stopping for tonight then unless there is work that can be done without connecting" A background search found Phase 2: apib_meas_setup.regs.bin is freq-response.pcapng from OUT 0, a capture begun with APWIN already running. Cascade's startup was two unrelated APWIN sessions stitched together. Claude flagged it as unproven as a cause.

IMD and crosstalk. "for the future projects file - 2 other things that are useful tests are Intermodulation distortion and crosstalk." Claude's first plan said IMD hit the same wall as arb, being a D/A signal family. "the AP documentation for the 2522 probably lists specs for the unit" Pulling the whole spec, Claude found the analog generator does IMD too, and corrected the plan. Chris added: "sice it has a whole seld test batterty, it will have "passing" and "failing" grades. and we can do self teets and get the actual results" That became docs/AP_SPECS.md, with no self-check figure for IMD or crosstalk.

The turns

  1. "isn't that what we did the full multitone run and pcap on APWIN for?"
  2. "what frequency should it be set at" caught a probe that would erase its own result.
  3. "I don't want regression..." made Claude look at raw events, which exposed the phase collision.
  4. "the AP documentation for the 2522 probably lists specs for the unit" surfaced the analog IMD path.

What we learned about working together

Evidence

Where we ended

EC→GEN was tested and still inert, both init blobs had provenance, and the startup was known to be a stitch. 83 tests. Open: redo the response comparison with phase-tagged dumps against the right captures, whether the stitch matters to the generator, and an IMD/crosstalk plan resting on published specs alone.
