The 7.4 dB cable loss was a frozen exponent

Session: 2026-08-29 16:43 → 2026-08-30 07:27 (one conversation, two sittings) · Outcome: Power & THD Tests 1–5 pass; the 0x8721 octave fault traced to a flag bit and a range freeze; the "cable loss" retracted.

Where we started

The FFT had worked natively that morning. The Power & THD live meter, built five days earlier, had never run on hardware. Before the break Claude had written to memory that the analog level path reads about 0.3 dB high.

The working belief was: the meter is built; the bench will confirm it.

Chris opened with: "ok i am ready to test out the power meter changes, can you give me the steps for that again? They're way up in the history"

The question

Does the live meter read correct level and THD in GenMon, in DUT mode, and through a real DUT (the Schiit SYS passive preamp)?

What happened

Test 1 passes, and a retraction. 0.0995 Vrms at −20 dBV commanded, THD+N −107.4 dB. Claude withdrew the "0.3 dB high" claim: it had compared runs in different range states. Chris added: "of note here - the interface is set for 8 ohms load, but there is no load on the system actually". Claude agreed the 0.0012 W was hypothetical.

Test 2: the slider tracks, the generator doesn't go low. From −26.5 to +6 dBV the level tracked within 0.06 dB across six range changes. Below −30 it read −30.03 for both −40 and −31.5, because the generator emitted identical bytes. _interpCell clamped to the lowest table point. Claude added a floor warning and refused to extrapolate, since that would mean guessing generator bytes.

Test 3: DUT gain flat at 0.1–0.2 dB. Two bugs showed up: 5.0 and 6.0 dBV emitted identical bytes (the top of the table snaps too), and a −3.87 dBV outlier at +2.0 was an octave read racing a range change. Claude reordered the read to bracket it.

Test 4: 524 megawatts. With the Schiit SYS in, the app showed +186.2 dB gain. Chris's queued note: "note the DUT GAIN of over 180dB". The octave register read 34593 (0x8721). The mantissa tracked the knob over three decades, so the preamp was fine. Claude added a plausibility guard and said it was the third time that day the same class of bug had appeared.

Six theories in a row. Claude proposed and acted on, one per run:

  1. The input picker skipped setInputMode, left over from Test 3. Chris: "one note - you said " The picker was already on "DUT Input" from Test 3," but i rebuilt the app between 3 and 4". Claude switched to a second theory, a change dropped before connect, and found a real silent-drop bug (guard isConnected). Fixing it did not change the octave.
  2. Bit 15 marks extreme analyzer gain. Masking it gave −25.5 dBV with the knob at max. Claude expected about 0 dBV from a unity passive attenuator and rejected it.
  3. Claude's own read reorder. Reverting it changed nothing.
  4. Response framing. A LEVEL REG DUMP showed a sliding-window byte pattern and did not reproduce the fault. All reads came back as clean 2-byte buffers.
  5. Unbalanced adapters. Chris: "of note here - there is never really a balanced connection. even when it is "XLR to XLR" the cable is XLR to RCA, RCA to BNC adapter, BNC to RCA adapter, then RCA to XLR." That killed it, since Test 3 had the same chain.

Claude summed it up as six theories, six wrong, each acted on before a discriminating test. Chris: "ok write memory, i need to go away for a while"

Naming. Next session Chris opened with: "a word on naming. We've been referring to "the SYS". that is the Schiit Sys passive preamp. But the cascade is also called SYS. The SYS-2522." Claude qualified every occurrence and saved a memory rule.

Test A clears the preamp. The first attempt died: writeFailed(-4), USB link lost. Claude suggested reset_ap.py; Chris: "wasn't reset_ap.py a windows script?" The transcript does not show Claude answering that. After a clean build, Test A ran with no Schiit SYS and still read 0x8721. So it was the code. Claude diffed the working _readLevelRegs against its own _readAnlrLevelRegs and found a 0x22 ready poll in one and not the other. It wrote that to memory as the resolved root cause, then the run showed 0x0F never reaches 0x22 in THD mode. Claude added a rule to memory: never mark a cause resolved before a hardware run confirms it.

Handing over the instrument. "is this a time when it would be helpful for you to connect directly and run tests and theories?" Then "go". Claude wrote Python probes and ran them against the 2522 from the Mac:

While the probe ran Chris raised regression testing: "changes in one area can affect other modules possibly, and the app might drift from functionality while new things are being added". Claude proposed two tiers and wrote Cascade/CascadeTests/DecodeRegressionTests.swift, six tests, led by an amplitude-table monotonicity test that fails on both calibration bugs found the day before. Creating the test target was left to Chris in Xcode.

Bit 15 is a flag. Back in the app, one log showed 0x8722 and 0x0722 with identical low bits. Masking gave −27.44 dBV, steady, zero warnings. Claude noted that it had rejected this exact hypothesis hours earlier against an assumption. Then Claude called the remaining −7.4 dB DUT gain cabling loss.

Chris did not accept it. "i am pretty suspicious of this cabling taking 7.4dB out of the signal. that doesn't sound right to me." Claude conceded that the textbook figure is 6.02 dB and 1.7 dB was unaccounted for. The knob check then tracked about 70 dB with no warnings. Chris corrected a description of the trace: "in the ui, that y axis auto-ranges i think. during the first parts of the test, there was a useful graph." The fix became a level floor on plotted points.

Test 5 finds the frozen exponent. Sweep and live meter agreed on THD (−74.8 vs −74.8 dB at −20). But 25 dB of commanded change produced 2 dB of measured change, and the octave sat at 1826 while the mantissa sawtoothed. Claude said its bit-15 fix had made the number plausible rather than correct. A range probe showed EB 01 00 stepping on every mantissa drop. In the app, the DUT blob pinned ranging (EB0100=0x81) and EB 02 02 froze. The octave was reconstructed from the range code, and across one boundary it gave 0.52 dB measured for 0.50 commanded.

The FFT as referee. Chris had queued: "for later, i would like to explore a higher resolution fft." Claude advised keeping the fundamental at 1024 Hz. Chris: ""keep the fundamental on-bin (1024 Hz), so the harmonics land on bin centres too " - this isn't really practical. when testing audio equipment, we should be able to pick a frequency." Claude found N=8192 puts 1 kHz on bin 125, and the hardware read −20.22 dBV @ 1000.0 Hz. Chris also asked: "the FFT Spectrum tab doesn't have a DUT/ Genmon picker. is it one of them by default?" It had none, so a picker was added. In DUT mode the FFT first gave a 42 dB spread on identical settings: Claude's range write was not landing. With a read-back check, two captures read 5.52 dBV at 6.0 commanded. The chain lost about half a dB. The 7.4 was retracted.

The turns

  1. "i rebuilt the app between 3 and 4": the assumption of process continuity was wrong.
  2. "there is never really a balanced connection": a whole branch of theories removed by one fact.
  3. Test A, aimed at Claude's own code instead of Chris's hardware.
  4. "is this a time when it would be helpful for you to connect directly"
  5. "i am pretty suspicious of this cabling taking 7.4dB out of the signal."

What we learned about working together

Where we ended

Level tracks across ranges; THD agrees between tabs; the FFT has a DUT picker, a linear axis and one point per bin. Open: the DUT absolute level reads about 7 dB low in the THD path, Test 6 (the amp) waits on that, auto-select N, and the XCTest target still needs creating.
